There are few things better in this world than homemade iced tea. It’s almost nostalgic for me since I grew up drinking it, and you can bet that homemade sweet tea is going to be a staple at any family function or event around here.

Let’s make it!

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • SUMMER FLAVOR: This is the PERFECT drink for summer! Cool and refreshing, this homemade iced tea blends the classic taste of sweet tea with the bright, zesty flavor of fresh oranges, making it perfect for warm weather months.
  • CUSTOMIZABLE: Not only is the sweetness customizable, but you can also experiment with different flavors! Try swapping the orange simple syrup for this blackberry simple syrup recipe for a fun (and delicious) variation.
  • NO ARTIFICAL FLAVORS: Store-bought versions often come loaded with added sugars and artificial ingredients. Homemade orange iced tea is made with real fruit and simple ingredients, making it a healthier and more wholesome option you can feel good about sipping.

Ingredients You’ll Need

  • Oranges: This recipe uses freshly squeezed orange juice to provide the best flavor. Using freshly squeezed over bottled orange juice also helps control the amount of sugar in this recipe.
  • Sugar: I used cane sugar, but you can easily swap brown sugar or even coconut sugar.
  • Water: You’ll need 5 cups total.
  • Black Tea Bags: Black tea is the classic choice for homemade iced tea. You can swap other flavors if you prefer a milder taste.
  • Extras for Garnish: Extra orange wedges, mint or basil springs make this tea extra fancy and delicious.

Tips for Preparing to Make This Recipe

  1. Straining: I highly recommend taking the extra step to strain the orange simple syrup mixture before adding it to the brewed tea.
  2. Variations: This recipe is easily customizable! Try swapping the orange simple syrup for this blackberry simple syrup. Have fun with adding a mixture of different fruits and other garnishes, too.

Step by Step Instructions

  1. Make the simple syrup: In a small saucepan over medium low heat, combine freshly squeezed orange juice and sugar. Stir until the sugar has dissolved, and then remove from heat.
  2. Strain: This is optional, but if you prefer to not have any orange pulp in your tea, you can strain the simple syrup. Simply place a fine mesh strainer over a container (I use a large mason jar) and pour the simple syrup through it to get rid of any excess pulp. Tip: Place a canning funnel over the mason jar for easy pouring (pictured below).
  3. Set the strained simple syrup aside and allow to cool while you make the tea.
  4. In another small pan, add 2 cups of water. Bring to a boil, and then remove from the heat. Add tea bags, and allow them to steep for 20 minutes.
  5. Meanwhile, fill a large pitcher with ice (about 4 cups).
  6. Remove the tea bags and then pour the orange simple syrup into the tea, stirring to combine.
  7. Pour the orange tea mixture into the pitcher with the ice, then add the remaining 3 cups of water. Stir well.
  8. Serve with extra orange slices and mint for garnish. Enjoy!

Recipe FAQs

Can I use orange juice instead of freshly squeezed orange juice in this recipe?

Yes, you can. Keep in mind that bottled orange juice will contain added sugar, so you will need to adjust the amount of sugar you add to this recipe to balance the sweetness.

What kind of tea is best for homemade sweet tea?

Black tea is the classic choice for homemade iced tea because of it’s bold, smooth flavor. However, green or white tea are both great options if you prefer a milder taste.

Can I sweeten this tea naturally without refined sugar?

Absolutely! Try honey, agave syrup, or maple syrup, or even a splash of orange juice for a naturally sweetened option. Be sure to add sweeteners while the tea is still warm so they dissolve easily.
