Elevate Summer Drinks with Homemade Blackberry Simple Syrup
This blackberry simple syrup is just that… simple and delicious! It is the perfect way to easily elevate any summer drink, from blackberry lemonade to cocktails!
Occasionally I will find myself with an abundance of fresh berries in the house, especially during the spring and summer seasons! I love using them in a variety of desserts, like this strawberry shortcake recipe or blueberry crisp.
If you’re like me and looking for another creative way to use up fresh berries, simple syrup is definitely the way to go! It is a great way to easily elevate any drink or dessert. Luckily, making your own simple syrup at home is super easy! Simply add equal parts water, sugar, and fresh fruit of your choice to a saucepan and cook until the sugar has dissolved and the fruit has had a chance to infuse. Let it cool and then transfer to a mason jar or other storage container of choice for use in a variety of recipes. It is a delicious way to add a subtle blackberry flavor to recipes- no store-bought syrup required!
Let’s make it, shall we?
Ingredients
This versatile syrup requires just three simple ingredients:
- Water
- Sugar
- Fresh blackberries
How to Make Blackberry Simple Syrup
- In a small saucepan, combine 1 cup water, 1 cup white sugar, and 1 cup of fresh juicy blackberries. Heat this mixture over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally with a wooden spoon until the sugar dissolves.
- Bring the simple syrup mixture to a boil, and then turn the heat down to low to let simmer for 15 minutes.
- Once the syrup has thickened slightly and is a beautiful dark purple, remove from heat. Strain the mixture using a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth, or simply pick the blackberries out of the syrup with a spoon.
- Let cool to room temperature before adding the strained syrup to an airtight container.
- Enjoy immediately or store in the fridge for up to two weeks.
Tips for Success
- You can use fresh or frozen blackberries in this recipe. Either works just fine!
- White sugar is traditionally used in simple syrup recipes, but you can swap it out for other sweeteners if you prefer. Honey, maple syrup, brown sugar or coconut sugar will all work just fine. Just be aware they may give the syrup a slightly different flavor.
- Experiment with different flavors! Swap out the blackberries for other berries or fresh herbs, add a splash of lemon juice, fresh lime juice or vanilla extract to the recipe… whatever strikes your fancy!
- I like using glass flip top bottles for simple syrups because they are easy to pour. Glass mason jars are also a good option for easy storage in the fridge.
Recipe Ideas
You can use this simple syrup in so many recipes! Seriously it’s so versatile. One of my favorite uses for it is in iced tea, but its also great in other favorite drinks, including homemade cocktails (blackberry margarita anyone?), mocktails, lemonade, and desserts! I’ve even heard its great heated up and spooned over vanilla ice cream (wink wink).
