My instant pot continues to amaze me.

I mean, I thought I understood the hype. I have used it successfully over the years to quickly whip up a variety of recipes, and when I finally conquered instant pot bone broth, I thought I had reached its full potential.

Ugh, how wrong I was! Because this, my friends, is homemade cinnamon applesauce. Delicious homemade cinnamon applesauce that is ready in roughly a half hour.

You heard that right. A pot of heaven can be yours in 30 minutes (or less if you work fast!)

P.S. I now consider myself an applesauce snob. Store-bought applesauce? Puh-lease.

What You’ll Love About This Recipe

  • QUICK AND EASY: Using the Instant Pot to make this homemade cinnamon applesauce is a game changer because it cooks delicious, wholesome applesauce in a fraction of the time.
  • DELICIOUS FALL FLAVORS: Tart, crisp apples cooked until soft and tender and seasoned with cinnamon and sugar…I mean what’s not to love?! Take advantage of apples during peak season to really let their flavor shine.
  • EASY TO PREP: This recipe uses just a few simple ingredients, making it easy to whip up on a whim! It can be made quickly and then stored in the fridge for later use.

Ingredients You’ll Need

  • Apples: 2 lbs. (about 8-9 of your favorite apples)
  • Water: Just 1/4 cup is needed! Filtered water is best.
  • Brown Sugar: I add 1/4 cup at the very end for added sweetness, but you may find your applesauce is sweet enough and doesn’t need it.
  • Lemon Juice: Just 1 tbsp is needed.
  • Cinnamon: An essential ingredient! You’ll need 1 1/2 tsp.

How to Make Homemade Applesauce

  1. Begin by coring and peeling 2 lbs of apples (this apple corer and peeler combo makes the process super easy). Roughly chop them and add to the bowl of the Instant Pot.
  2. To the apples, add 1 tbsp lemon juice, 1 1/2 tsp cinnamon, and 1/4 cup water. Stir.
  3. Place the lid on the Instant Pot (this is the brand of electric pressure cooker I use), making sure to lock it in place. Make sure the pressure valve is set to SEAL. Set to cook for 5 minutes under HIGH pressure. It should take about 10 minutes for the Instant Pot to come up to pressure.
  4. When the 5 minutes of cook time is up, let the Instant Pot sit for 15-20 minutes to do a natural pressure release. After this time, you can manually release any remaining pressure by switching the valve to VENT.
  5. Uncover the Instant Pot to reveal delicious cooked apples! At this time, you can use a potato masher or immersion blender to create your applesauce. I recommend a potato masher if you like to leave small chunks of apple in your applesauce, and an immersion blender for smooth applesauce.
  6. Once your applesauce is the desired consistency, stir in 1/4 cup of brown sugar (*see note below). When cool, transfer to preferred airtight container. You can use a canning funnel to make this process very easy!
  7. Store applesauce in the fridge to enjoy for 7-10 days.

Rachael’s Top Tip!

I recommend tasting the applesauce before adding the additional brown sugar at the very end. If you used sweeter apples, you may decide it doesn’t need any added sugar! Unsweetened applesauce is still delicious 🙂

Easy Tips for Success

  • Use whatever kind of apple you prefer. A lot of recipes will recommend using a combination of sweet and tart apples. Today I used honey crisp apples. If using a more tart apple (like Granny Smith) you may want to increase the amount of sugar to 1/3 cup.
  • Don’t skip the lemon juice! I find the little bit of lemon juice helps the apples to retain their color. It also helps to balance out the sweetness of the apples.
  • This recipe can also be made in the slow cooker! You will go through the exact same process, setting the slow cooker to cook on LOW for 4 hours.
  • Don’t be afraid to get creative. Experiment with adding this applesauce to your favorite baked goods, or heat it up and use the warm applesauce as a topping for pancakes!
  • This recipe is a great way to take advantage of fresh apples during apple season.
