Making seasoned breadcrumbs on your own at home is seriously one of the easiest things you can do. It’s practical and cost effective, making it a win win in my book!

I used leftover sourdough bread in this recipe to create homemade sourdough breadcrumbs, but you can use whatever kind of bread you like! I also prefer to season my breadcrumbs, but that step is optional. For increased versatility, homemade breadcrumbs can be plain or seasoned to add to your favorite recipes (meatloaf, breaded chicken, and more!)

All natural. No preservatives or other added yucky stuff. Just good ol’ fashioned bread.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • DELICIOUS: Once you get used to the depth of flavor that sourdough brings to recipes, nothing else will quite cut it! These breadcrumbs are no different. The use of sourdough bread adds a delicious tang to a number of recipes.
  • ZERO WASTE: I love any creative way to repurpose food into something delicious! Just like this sourdough stuffing and overnight sourdough French toast recipe, these breadcrumbs are a great way to use up any leftover bread you may have hanging around your kitchen.
  • VERSATILE: Sourdough breadcrumbs can be used in a variety of recipes, from breaded chicken to meatloaf! For even more versatility, leave them unseasoned and store in the freezer for later use.

Ingredients You’ll Need

  • Good quality bread (homemade or store-bought)
  • Seasonings: Salt, garlic and onion powder, and some dried parsley!

How to Make Sourdough Breadcrumbs

  1. Preheat oven to 300 degrees F. Begin cubing fresh (or stale!) bread. I typically go for around 1 inch cubes, but it doesn’t have to be precise. They are going to get blended up here in a bit anyways 🙂
  2. Add cubed bread to a food processor or high powered blender. Blend until the bread resembles coarse crumbs. You can blend the bread to be as fine as you like- use your personal judgement here.
  3. Pour breadcrumbs onto a prepared baking sheet, making sure to spread them out evenly. Bake for 15 minutes or until lightly toasted and golden brown.
  4. Remove the breadcrumbs from the oven and allow to cool. Add to a small mixing bowl and add seasonings, stirring well.
  5. Store the seasoned breadcrumbs in an airtight container (I love my Weck storage jars) for up to 3 months.
