Homemade Pudding is Actually Super Easy.
I have made an obscene amount of pudding over the last couple of days. I would now consider myself somewhat of a pudding connoisseur, as I am now well versed in the ways of homemade pudding.
The good news? It’s much easier to make than I ever really thought, and it can be made with just a few ingredients you likely alreday have hanging around your kitchen.
My family and I really loved this pudding recipe (and it makes a great base for crushed cookies and gummy worms, too!)

- Total Time: 1 hour 10 minutes
Description
Easy to make, this rich and decadent homemade chocolate pudding makes the perfect no bake dessert! Made with simple ingredients and perfectly flavored with maple syrup, vanilla, and plenty of chocolate, it is a dessert recipe you will find yourself coming back to again and again.
Ingredients
- 1 ¼ cup pure maple syrup
- ½ unsweetened cocoa powder
- ¼ tsp salt
- 3 tbsp cornstarch
- 3 ½ cups whole milk
- 1 tsp vanilla bean paste or pure vanilla extract
- 2 tbsp butter
Instructions
- In a large saucepan over medium heat, combine the maple syrup, cocoa powder, salt, and cornstarch. Using a whisk, begin to whisk together the mixture until combined and smooth.
- Slowly pour in the milk, continuing to whisk until combined. Bring the mixture to a boil, continuing to whisk/stir so the mixture doesn’t burn. Note: This will take 8-10 minutes. Be patient and don’t rush it, or the pudding will not thicken properly! You will see bubbles start to form around the edges of the pan first; wait until they begin to form in the middle, and then boil for 1 minute.
- Remove from heat, and then whisk in the butter and vanilla.
- Add the mixture to a heat proof bowl and let sit for 5 minutes before placing a piece of plastic wrap directly on the surface of the pudding to prevent a skin from forming on top.
- Refrigerate for at least 1 hour before serving (the pudding will continue to thicken as it cools). Enjoy!
Notes
- Chill time: The pudding mixture will continue to thicken as it cools, so it’s essential to allow it plenty of chill time in the fridge before enjoying.
- Make Ahead: Pudding is a great make ahead dessert option! I recommend making this recipe up to 2 days in advance and storing in the fridge until ready to use.
- Storage: Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3-4 days.
- Chill Time: 1 hour
- Cook Time: 10 minutes

- Method: Stove Top
