Create an Easy and Beautiful 4th of July Wreath

Easily DIY a 4th of July wreath just in time for everyone’s favorite summer holiday! This quick and easy patriotic wreath is the perfect way to to add some patriotic flare to your front door.

A few months ago, I made a couple simple spring grapevine wreaths for our front door (you can check out that DIY here). Now that summer is here (yay!) I decided I wanted to update the wreaths with some patriotic color accents and ribbon to celebrate Memorial Day and the 4th of July. This was an easy wreath to quickly add some patriotic pride to our home.

These summer wreaths could easily be left up all summer long, from Memorial Day to Labor Day!

This beautiful wreath DIY is super simple (trust me, I’m no expert crafter!) and can easily be customized with a variety of patriotic decorations to fit your style preferences. Let me walk you through the basics.

Materials

To make this cute and festive front door wreath, you’ll need a few materials:

  • Grapevine wreath form
  • Green floral wire for attaching elements
  • Hot glue gun (optional but can come in handy)
  • Patriotic ribbon
  • Red berries (I grabbed some from my Christmas decor stash!)
  • Patriotic themed elements (think small themed signs, small flags, stars, etc.)

How to Create a 4th of July Wreath

  1. The first step is to choose your base, which for me was the greenery. A tip here to save yourself a LOT of money is to buy a long garland of greenery and use wire cutters or maybe even garden shears (ahem, speaking from experience here…) to cut into smaller sections.
  2. Begin by adding your greenery to your wreath first, starting at the bottom and working your way up counterclockwise. This is KEY in making a wreath- you need to make sure all your floral elements are running in the same direction.
  3. Begin adding in your floral elements, again starting at the bottom and working your way up counterclockwise. I recommend buying florals that not only vary in color, but also texture. Adding in elements like berries, seed heads, or foliage with a grassy texture helps your wreath look more realistic.
  4. Attach wreath elements using green floral wire. I simply cut a long enough piece of wire to wrap around each element, twisting it in the back and tucking into the back of the wreath to secure each element in place. You won’t have to do this for every single element, mainly for your base greenery and larger, heavier floral or accent pieces.
  5. Once you’ve attached all your elements, you are ready to add in any final larger decor elements for a finishing touch. I decided to go with blue ribbon accented with red and white striped ribbon for some extra patriotic spirit. I was initially going for small patriotic stars, but ended up adding in some red berry accents instead, along with some small fourth of July themed signs from Hobby Lobby.

Quick Tips for Success

  • Floral wire is highly recommended for attaching wreath elements, and is especially easy to attach when using grapevine wreath forms. It’s also easy to find at any craft store.
  • You can use any kind of wreath frame you like. I tend to prefer the more natural look of grapevine, but you could use a wire wreath form or even a foam wreath, which are super affordable and usually available at your local dollar store.
  • If there are any pesky elements that you can’t get to sit just right, this is where a hot glue gun really comes in handy. Again, they are fairly inexpensive and easy to find at any craft or big box store. Hot glue guns also come in handy for adding in more elements like burlap ribbon, small signs, paper stars, or small decor pieces.
