Apple Cider Just Got Even Better.

We took a trip last weekend to visit a local apple orchard, and came home with armfuls of fresh apples and apple cider. We had the best time, and while we were there I bought the girls and I some apple cider donuts.

These donuts were probably some of the best I have ever eaten (and I’m no stranger to donuts!). I immediately thought that I had to go home and try and recreate my own version.

This is my take on homemade apple cider donuts, packed with flavor and best when they are served warm from the oven.

I hope you enjoy!

This Recipe Is…

  • Packed with fall flavors: Apple butter, fresh apple cider, warm spices, maple syrup…. and then coated in cinnamon sugar? These donuts are hard to beat 🙂
  • Baked rather than fried: Similar to my baked blueberry donut recipe, my favorite thing about these donuts (besides the taste) is that they are baked rather than fried, making them an easier (and healthier!) option.
  • Kid Approved: These sweet donuts are packed with flavor, making them a perfect treat for kids!

Ingredient Notes

  • Apple Butter: This is what really adds the flavor to the donuts!
  • Sourdough Starter: I used sourdough discard in this recipe, but active starter will also work! For sweeter recipes like this, I like to use discard no older than 2 weeks. This helps avoid any slight tang once baked.
  • Apple Cider: One of my favorite ingredients to use in recipes (see this recipe for apple cider punch– so good!) Be sure to use real, concentrated apple cider for the best flavor. It’s easy to find during the fall months at farm stands, local orchards, and grocery stores!

Description

Soft, fluffy, and packed with fall flavors, these baked sourdough apple cider donuts are the perfect fall treat to cozy up with during the cooler months. These donuts are baked until golden, and then brushed with melted butter and rolled in a cinnamon sugar coating to make them out of this world delicious. A must try recipe during the fall months!

Ingredients

Scale

Donuts

½ cup apple cider

½ cup sourdough starter

3 tablespoons neutral flavored oil (I use avocado oil)

⅓ cup apple butter

¾ cup maple syrup

2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon baking powder

1 teaspoon cinnamon

½ teaspoon salt

¼ teaspoon nutmeg

1 ¾ cup all purpose flour

Cinnamon Sugar Coating

4 tbsp butter, melted

1 cup brown sugar

1 ½ teaspoons cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease two donut trays and set aside.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the apple cider, sourdough discard, oil, apple butter, and maple syrup. Whisk together until combined.
  3. Add in the baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and flour. Mix together until well combined.
  4. Using a spoon or piping bag, fill the prepared donut trays about ½ way full.
  5. Bake in preheated oven for 10-12 minutes. The edges should be lightly browned.
  6. Allow the donuts to cool in the donut pan for 2 minutes, then remove and allow them to cool slightly on a wire rack.
  7. Melt the butter and set aside to cool slightly.
  8. In a small mixing bowl, combine the brown sugar and cinnamon. Mix together until combined.
  9. Using a pastry brush, brush the donuts with the melted butter, being sure to coat the top, bottom, and sides. Gently roll the donut in the cinnamon sugar mixture until fully coated.
  10. Enjoy!
