Ingredients
Units
Scale
- 2 cups strawberries
- 1/3 cup sugar
- 1 tsp lemon juice
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
Instructions
- Add chopped strawberries, sugar, and lemon juice to a small saucepan over medium high heat. Stir until the mixture is combined and the strawberries are well coated in the sugar.
- Continue to stir as you bring the mixture to a boil, boiling for exactly 5 minutes. If preferred, slightly mash the strawberries as they cook to create a smoother texture.
- Remove from heat and add in the vanilla, stirring again to combine. Allow the mixture to cool slightly before serving (it will continue to thicken as it cools).
- Enjoy!
Notes
- Strawberries: Use fresh, in season berries that are ripe for the best flavor. Frozen strawberries will also work, just do not thaw before using. Thawing the berries will create excess water, which will affect the overall texture and flavor of the sauce.
- Texture: The amount of strawberry chunks in the sauce is up to you. I like to slightly mash the strawberries as they are cooking, creating a smoother (but still slightly chunky) consistency. If you want a really smooth sauce, an immersion blender would work well.
- Variations: This method would work well using other berries, or as a mixture. This homemade raspberry sauce is also divine.
- Storage: Leftover sauce will store well in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
- Freezing: Let the sauce cool completely, then store in an airtight container in the freezer for up to 3 months. Allow to thaw at room temperature before heating up over the stove or in the microwave.
